The example, line by line
A small CNC shop often runs repeat parts in jobs of 10 to 100. This example machines 10 brackets from 1/2 x 2 in 6061 flat bar, 3.125 in of bar each, 20 minutes on the mill per part and one 30 minute setup. Here is the batch the calculator starts with, worked out the same way. It makes 10 parts at $25.72 each.
How this is calculated
- Cost of each material = pack price / pack size x amount used, after the units are changed to match.
- Cost per batch = all materials + packaging for every part + your time + time on the machine + setup or other costs. In the example: $257.18.
- Cost per part = cost per batch / parts made. $257.18 / 10 = $25.72.
- Price = cost per part / (1 - margin). At 30%: $36.74.

Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to make a CNC machined part?
In the example on this page (6061 aluminium mounting bracket, 10 parts per batch, prices from October 2026), one part costs $25.72. That counts every material, packaging and 50 min of labour at $30.00 an hour, plus 3 h 20 min on the machine. Your cost depends on your prices and your batch size, so put in your own numbers.
What should I charge for a CNC machined part?
Divide your cost per part by 1 minus the margin you want. With a cost of $25.72 and a 30% margin, the price is $25.72 / 0.70 = $36.74. If you also sell wholesale, check that half of that price still covers your cost.
Where do the example prices come from?
From supplier product pages checked in October 2026: Metals4U, Lakeshore Carbide, AllIndustrial. Shipping is not included. The prices make the example real; they are not a quote, so change them to what you paid.
Can I save this cnc machining recipe?
Yes. Click "Save this as a recipe in Stockria". A free account opens with your materials and this part as a product made from them, costed the same way as here. When a material price changes, the cost per part changes with it.
Does this calculator change units for me?
Yes. Enter the amount you use and the pack you buy in any unit of the same kind: grams with kilos, ounces or pounds; millilitres with litres or fluid ounces; millimetres with metres, inches or feet. The calculator converts before it does the maths.
