The example, line by line
Small fab shops often run 10 to 50 of a part at a time. This example makes 20 L-shaped shelf brackets, each from 20 in of 1/4 x 2 in flat bar, cut, welded, ground and painted. Here is the batch the calculator starts with, worked out the same way. It makes 20 parts at $15.61 each.
How this is calculated
- Cost of each material = pack price / pack size x amount used, after the units are changed to match.
- Cost per batch = all materials + packaging for every part + your time + time on the machine + setup or other costs. In the example: $312.30.
- Cost per part = cost per batch / parts made. $312.30 / 20 = $15.61.
- Price = cost per part / (1 - margin). At 30%: $22.31.

Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to make a fabricated metal part?
In the example on this page (steel l shelf bracket, 20 parts per batch, prices from October 2026), one part costs $15.61. That counts every material, packaging and 4 h of labour at $35.00 an hour, plus 2 h on the machine. Your cost depends on your prices and your batch size, so put in your own numbers.
What should I charge for a fabricated metal part?
Divide your cost per part by 1 minus the margin you want. With a cost of $15.61 and a 30% margin, the price is $15.61 / 0.70 = $22.31. If you also sell wholesale, check that half of that price still covers your cost.
Where do the example prices come from?
From supplier product pages checked in October 2026: Bulk Metal Sales (freight or pickup extra), Cyberweld, local welding gas supplier, hardware store. Shipping is not included. The prices make the example real; they are not a quote, so change them to what you paid.
Can I save this metal fabrication recipe?
Yes. Click "Save this as a recipe in Stockria". A free account opens with your materials and this part as a product made from them, costed the same way as here. When a material price changes, the cost per part changes with it.
Does this calculator change units for me?
Yes. Enter the amount you use and the pack you buy in any unit of the same kind: grams with kilos, ounces or pounds; millilitres with litres or fluid ounces; millimetres with metres, inches or feet. The calculator converts before it does the maths.
