How this is calculated

  • Cost of each material = pack price / pack size x amount used, after the units are changed to match.
  • Cost per batch = all materials + packaging for every candle + your time. In the example: $57.29.
  • Cost per candle = cost per batch / candles made. $57.29 / 12 = $4.77.
  • Price = cost per candle / (1 - margin). At 60%: $11.94.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to make a candle?

In the example on this page (lavender soy candle, 8 oz tin, 12 candles per batch, prices from October 2026), one candle costs $4.77. That counts every material, packaging and 1 h of labour at $20.00 an hour. Your cost depends on your prices and your batch size, so put in your own numbers.

What should I charge for a candle?

Divide your cost per candle by 1 minus the margin you want. With a cost of $4.77 and a 60% margin, the price is $4.77 / 0.40 = $11.94. If you also sell wholesale, check that half of that price still covers your cost.

Where do the example prices come from?

From supplier product pages checked in October 2026: CandleScience. Shipping is not included. The prices make the example real; they are not a quote, so change them to what you paid.

Can I save this candles recipe?

Yes. Click "Save this as a recipe in Stockria". A free account opens with your materials and this candle as a product made from them, costed the same way as here. When a material price changes, the cost per candle changes with it.

Does this calculator change units for me?

Yes. Enter the amount you use and the pack you buy in any unit of the same kind: grams with kilos, ounces or pounds; millilitres with litres or fluid ounces; millimetres with metres, inches or feet. The calculator converts before it does the maths.
